The
Thai New Year is a time for laughter, celebration, religious
ceremonies and merit making ... for families and friends.
And of course the splashing of water for good luck ... lots of it!
Start the day with a few welcome drinks and snacks at the
Pro Dive office before we depart with our convoy of trucks
with plenty of ammunition and supplies for the day's festivities.
Prepare to be soaking wet within the first kilometer and enjoy
the opportunity to hose down the local police at the traffic
circle! Our convoy will travel along the Chalong to Kata,
Karon, Patong gauntlet of roadside water ambush sites engaging
the local families staffed with 3 generations of experienced
roadside water tossers. Sometimes they will put huge ice blocks
in the barrels along the roads and the water can be an awakening
experience on a hot day. Often decoy bodies lay across the
roads to stop traffic so the local ambushers can get you from
the rear of the vehicles at close range and get a chance to
reach out with a hand slimy with talcum powder and water to
mark your face like Indian war paint. This talcum is just
baby powder and washes off in minutes as soon as the next
person gets a lucky shot at you.
While the roadside tossers are keeping you busy other happy armed and crewed vehicles with water barrels will be driving down the opposite lane hosing you down from their vehicles and sometimes the convoys will be over a kilometer long traveling each direction. This will continue as we pass through several communities and townships and we will stop to replenish our ammunition again before entering Patong where even the city water works trucks will hose you down if you cross their path. People will be singing and dancing with loud music playing in many areas to add to the festive atmosphere.
After replenishing ammunition again outside of Patong during
lunch (provided as part of the tour) we head back to the Chalong
area via a different route. Usually we arrive back at out
dive and tour company office in Chalong Bay about 5:00 PM
where guests can clean up putting on dry clothes and then
we will head down to the seawall on the bay for a fixed menu,
eight dish dinner at the Kan Eang Restaurant.
We have a fixed price of 1,500 Thai baht per person for the
day's festivities that includes the water tossers and all
of the water you can waste (we pay for water in Phuket), lunch,
dinner and the transportation / drivers for the 60 kilometer
route that we follow every year. Return hotel transfers can
be easily and cheaply arranged in advance and costs depend
on where the guests will be staying on the island.
Bookings must be made a minimum of 72 hours in advance due
to logistical matters such as water tossers needed, vehicles,
drivers, drinks , lunch and a reservation has to be made in
advance for the dinner and social at the end of the day.
SPECIAL NOTE: All water used in Phuket during this festival is city tap water or safe private home well water, canal, pond, river or lake water is not used locally.
